The Trek
From the morning briefing to your hour with the troop — a straightforward, rewarding day in the bamboo forest.
Morning Briefing
Arrive at Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM. Rangers brief your group on safety, etiquette, and what to expect — then you're assigned to a troop and set off into the forest.
Into the Bamboo
Expert guides and trackers lead you through the lower bamboo zones of the Virungas. Trails are at lower altitude than gorilla trekking — typically 1–3 hours of hiking depending on where the troop has moved that morning.
One Hour with the Troop
Once located, you spend one full hour observing the monkeys at close range. Troops of 80–100 individuals move dynamically through the trees — young monkeys leaping between stems, adults grooming, feeding, and playing. Photography opportunities are exceptional.
Return & Afternoon
Trek back to headquarters — typically by midday. The afternoon is free for gorilla trekking, a Dian Fossey hike, or a volcano ascent. Many visitors complete both golden monkey and gorilla trekking on the same day.
