In the highlands of northern Rwanda near Volcanoes National Park, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo sit side by side, separated by roughly a kilometer of land but naturally connected. They formed after volcanic activity from Mount Muhabura sent lava flows across old river channels. Burera is the larger, higher altitude lake; Ruhondo is smaller but no less striking. Both lie at the foot of Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Bisoke, and their still waters mirror the volcanoes above them, especially at sunrise and sunset. The Twin Lakes sit near Musanze, about two and a half hours from Kigali, and are commonly paired with gorilla trekking itineraries for travelers who want a quieter counterpoint to the forest.
Boat cruises and canoeing with local fishermen, exploring hidden islands and lakeside villages
Kayaking, best in the still morning hours when the volcanoes are clearly visible above the water
Birdwatching around the nearby Rugezi Wetland, home to kingfishers, herons, grey crowned cranes, cormorants, African fish eagles, hamerkops, and darters
Hiking and nature walks through terraced hills, banana plantations, and eucalyptus forest, including sunrise hikes and village walks
Cultural visits to learn traditional farming and fishing methods, banana beer brewing, and basket weaving
Island exploration, including Muhabura, Bushongo, Bishosho, and Cuza islands, all good for picnics and birdlife
Photography and relaxation, from lakeside retreats to wellness escapes and small eco-lodges

ποΈ Best Time to Visit
Year round, with the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offering the clearest volcano views. Mornings generally give the best visibility for photography.
