A Rainforest Rich in Biodiversity

Nyungwe holds 13 primate species, more than 300 bird species, over 1,000 plant species, hundreds of butterfly species, and numerous orchids, reptiles, and amphibians. It's especially known for chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, owl faced monkeys, blue monkeys, and mangabeys, including Angola colobus troops that can number more than 300 individuals, among the largest arboreal primate groups recorded anywhere in Africa. It's also considered Rwanda's most important birding destination, with many species found nowhere else outside the Albertine Rift.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

Chimpanzee trekking, canopy walks, misty jungle hikes, and cultural stops combine naturally with a Nyungwe itinerary, and the park pairs well with gorilla trekking further north for a longer Rwanda journey.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Year round, though the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) bring easier trails and better wildlife viewing. The rainforest stays photogenic through the wetter months too, with mist adding to the atmosphere.
