Protect nature. Strengthen communities. Every GorillaWise journey across Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania is built to give something back to the people and places that make it extraordinary.
We believe tourism should create a positive and lasting impact β from the misted volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, to Uganda's primate forests, to Tanzania's open savannahs. Choose a destination below to see how we give back there.
5%
of our contribution from every journey, returned to the community.
“Responsible tourism is not simply about minimizing harm β it's about creating a reason for communities to see conservation and tourism as opportunities.”
The focus depends on the destination our clients choose to visit, and we adapt our support to local priorities so the contribution can make a meaningful difference where our guests travel.
Depending on the destination, this can include basic health insurance, small livestock, tree planting, house renovations and education support for children from vulnerable families.
Agricultural support may include technical guidance, fertilizer, improved seeds and crop diversification to help farmers produce a wider range of nutritious crops that meet household needs.
We actively build community-based experiences into our itineraries, so travellers can spend directly with local people, artisans, families and community enterprises.
Where the contribution goes
Our community support is designed around practical needs and locally meaningful projects, chosen with the communities we work alongside.
Helping vulnerable community members access essential healthcare.
Providing productive assets that can strengthen household livelihoods.
Supporting reforestation, environmental awareness and healthier landscapes.
Helping improve basic living conditions for families in need.
Assisting children without parents, children who have dropped out of school, and children from poor families.
A village, grown through tourism
Musanze is the founder's home city and the heart of our connection to the communities around the Virunga Mountains. Here, GorillaWise is dedicated to helping uplift our local village through a community tourism initiative at Isaac Waterfalls Community.
Rather than visitors simply passing through, we invite them to spend time with local people, learn from them, experience their traditions and create income that stays within the community.
Community-based experiences
At GorillaWise, we include community-based activities in our Rwanda itineraries whenever possible. When guests pay for these experiences, the income goes directly to the people providing them.
Teaching and showcasing local crafts so community members can earn from their skills.
Guests learn local recipes directly from community members.
Visitors experience everyday life, food, stories and hospitality in a local home.
Travellers sit with artisans, learn traditional weaving and take part in the process.
Guided walks introduce guests to village life, landscapes and daily activities.
Nature, storytelling and community livelihoods come together around the falls.
Respectful cultural encounters introduce visitors to traditional knowledge and healing practices.
How the value moves
Why this matters
When local people benefit from visitors, their knowledge, culture, skills and natural surroundings become part of an economy that can be strengthened for future generations.
From the forests of the Virunga Mountains to Rwanda's savannahs and rainforests, we want our guests to experience a country where nature and people are connected β and where their journey can contribute to both.
It's an opportunity to meet people, support local enterprise, experience authentic culture and contribute to the protection of the places that make this country extraordinary.
Wildlife, nature & communities
Uganda is a country where extraordinary wildlife landscapes are closely connected to the communities living around them β from the mist-covered forests of Bwindi and Mgahinga to the chimpanzee forests of Kibale, the savannahs of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, and the remote wilderness of Kidepo Valley.
At GorillaWise, we believe responsible tourism should create a positive footprint. Our journeys connect travellers with Uganda's wildlife, landscapes and cultures while supporting communities and conservation efforts.
Protected landscapes
Impenetrable forest and volcanic slopes protecting mountain-gorilla habitat.
Renowned for chimpanzees and some of Africa's richest primate diversity.
Landscapes supporting elephants, lions, hippos, buffalo, antelope and many bird species.
Conservation is not only about protecting individual animals β it is about protecting forests, wetlands, rivers, savannahs and the ecological systems on which wildlife and people depend.
20%
of park entrance-fee revenue shared with communities neighbouring protected areas, through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
These funds support livelihoods and human-wildlife conflict mitigation. Supported priorities have included schools, health centres, water infrastructure, feeder roads, tree planting, beekeeping, livestock rearing and agricultural initiatives.
Beyond revenue-sharing
Beyond Uganda's conservation revenue-sharing system, GorillaWise gives back 5% of our contribution from each journey to community support initiatives. The specific support depends on where our guests choose to travel.
Helping vulnerable community members access essential healthcare.
Providing productive assets that can strengthen household livelihoods.
Supporting reforestation, environmental awareness and healthier landscapes.
Helping improve basic living conditions for families in need.
Assisting children without parents, children who have dropped out of school, and children from vulnerable families.
Technical support, improved seeds, fertilizer where appropriate, crop diversification and practical knowledge to help farmers improve production and household nutrition.
Communities are part of conservation
Living beside protected areas can bring both opportunities and challenges. Communities may benefit from tourism while also experiencing crop damage and other forms of human-wildlife conflict. Uganda's conservation approach recognises communities as important stakeholders through revenue sharing, engagement, enterprise development, conservation education and conflict mitigation.
A safari is not simply about photographing wildlife β it is also about understanding the people who live alongside it, supporting local businesses and protecting the landscapes that sustain both.
Community-based experiences
We try to add community-based activities to our itineraries whenever appropriate, so communities can benefit directly from travellers β not only through donations or tourism revenue-sharing.
Guests meet local families and artisans, and support community-owned businesses directly.
Guests experience traditional food and cooking alongside the people who make it.
Travellers learn crafts and visit local farms to discover traditional knowledge.
Guided walks introduce guests to village life and Uganda's local culture and history.
Guests can purchase locally made crafts directly from the producers themselves.
Protecting Uganda's primates
From mountain gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga to chimpanzees in Kibale, primate tourism creates a powerful reason to protect forests and biodiversity. GorillaWise encourages guests to respect trekking regulations, maintain appropriate distances, avoid disturbing wildlife and follow the guidance of trackers and park authorities.
The privilege of meeting wildlife comes with a responsibility to protect its home.
Human-wildlife conflict remains a conservation challenge for communities close to protected areas. GorillaWise believes tourism should help strengthen this relationship by creating opportunities for communities to benefit from visitors.

Your journey should help protect it.
Wildlife, nature & communities
Tanzania is one of Africa's great wildlife destinations, home to remarkable landscapes and ecosystems. From the Serengeti and Ngorongoro to Tarangire and wider wildlife corridors, conservation is closely connected to communities.
GorillaWise believes responsible tourism should create a positive footprint β for the wildlife, and for the people who live alongside it.
Protected landscapes
Vast grasslands and migration routes at the heart of Tanzania's ecosystems.
A protected crater ecosystem where conservation and communities meet.
Wildlife corridors and wetlands supporting elephants and diverse species.
These protected areas safeguard wildlife, migration routes, forests, wetlands and grasslands β home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and many bird species.
Conservation through tourism
Tanzania's Wildlife Management Area (WMA) system allows communities to participate in wildlife management and benefit from sustainable wildlife-related enterprises.
Community conservation can support schools, health services, water, beekeeping, livestock, agriculture and tree nurseries β recognising communities as important partners in conservation, not bystanders to it.
