Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is arguably the most visually striking lake in Uganda, possibly in East Africa: a deep, island-studded mountain lake surrounded by intensely terraced hills in southwestern Uganda's Kabale District, sitting at about 1,962 meters above sea level. The lake covers approximately 61 square kilometers and contains 29 islands of varying size, the largest being Bwama and Njuyeera. 'Bunyonyi' means 'place of many little birds' in Rukiga, and the lake lives up to its name β€” the papyrus margins, swamp edges, and forested islands shelter more than 200 bird species. Unlike most East African lakes, Bunyonyi has no hippos or crocodiles, making swimming genuinely safe and relaxed. It's used primarily as a recovery stop after gorilla trekking in nearby Bwindi or Mgahinga, and the pace here is one of Uganda's most peaceful.

After Gorilla Trekking

Lake Bunyonyi is 90 minutes from Bwindi's Buhoma and Nkuringo sectors and about 30 minutes from Kisoro, making it the natural place to relax after a physically demanding gorilla trek. Most Bwindi itineraries finish with one or two nights here before returning to Kampala or flying from Kigali.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

We close nearly every Bwindi itinerary with two nights at Lake Bunyonyi, choosing lodges with lake frontage, arranging canoe trips, and building in the slow pace the lake demands.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Year round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the clearest views and calmest water. The lake is equally beautiful after rain.
