The Batwa are the indigenous forest people of the Bwindi and Mgahinga forests in southwestern Uganda, one of Central Africa's oldest surviving ethnic groups, believed to have inhabited the Afromontane forests of the Great Lakes region for tens of thousands of years. The establishment of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in 1991 displaced the Batwa from the forests that had sustained them for millennia, and today many Batwa communities live in poverty on the park boundaries, struggling to maintain identity and livelihood outside the forest. The Batwa Cultural Experience β run by community-based tourism operators and supported by several conservation NGOs β brings visitors into the forest with Batwa elders as guides, sharing traditional knowledge, skills, and stories that would otherwise be lost.
The Batwa Trail in Bwindi (Buhoma sector), a full-day guided forest walk led by Batwa elders demonstrating traditional hunting, fire-making, medicinal plant knowledge, and honey harvesting
The Batwa Cultural Experience at Mgahinga, including forest skills, traditional dancing, and story-telling by elders in their ancestral landscape
Community village visits to Batwa settlements on the park boundary, with opportunities to support Batwa-run craft cooperatives
The Ride4aWoman and Bwindi Community Trust projects around Buhoma offering alternative income programs and education initiatives
The Batwa experience raises difficult questions about conservation displacement and indigenous rights β questions that the best operators address honestly. Visitors leave with an understanding of the tension between protecting gorillas and protecting the people who have always lived alongside them, and with revenue that directly supports Batwa cultural programs and alternative livelihoods.
