From the Kingโ€™s Palace and Nyungwe Forest to gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, the Dian Fossey exhibition and the final discovery of Kigali, each day brings a different side of the Great Lakes region. The extra night in Kigali creates a more relaxed ending after the Golden Monkey experience, allowing time for a city tour and, depending on the departure schedule, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN KIGALI โ€“ WELCOME TO RWANDA

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where you will be welcomed by your private guide and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, a short Kigali experience may be arranged or you can simply relax after your journey.

Day 2

KIGALI โ€“ KINGโ€™S PALACE โ€“ NYUNGWE FOREST

After breakfast, begin the journey toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. Travel through Rwandaโ€™s rolling green hills, countryside, villages and tea-growing landscapes. Visit the historic Kingโ€™s Palace and discover Rwandaโ€™s royal heritage, traditions and former monarchy, with an opportunity to see the long-horned Ankole cattle associated with this heritage. Continue toward Nyungwe and settle into the rainforest environment.

Day 3

NYUNGWE FOREST โ€“ WATERFALLS, CANOPY & ZIPLINE โ€“ LAKE KIVU

Wake up to the sounds of Nyungwe and hike toward the Ndambarare Waterfalls, discovering rainforest vegetation, birds and wildlife along the way. Later, experience the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walkway and continue the adventure with the forest zipline. Afterward, transfer toward Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu and relax at your lakeside accommodation.

Day 4

LAKE KIVU ISLAND ADVENTURE โ€“ TRANSFER TO BWINDI, UGANDA

Enjoy a private boat excursion on Lake Kivu. Explore Napoleon Island, known for dramatic scenery and fruit bats, as well as Monkey Island and Peace Island. After the boat experience, cross into Uganda and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the worldโ€™s important habitats for endangered mountain gorillas.

Day 5

GORILLA TREKKING IN BWINDI โ€“ BANANA BEER CULTURAL EXPERIENCE โ€“ RWANDA

After an early breakfast, head to the Rushaga sector for gorilla trekking. Following the briefing, enter Bwindiโ€™s ancient forest with ranger guides in search of a mountain gorilla family. After the trek, cross back into Rwanda and meet local women for a traditional banana beer experience, including an introduction to the process, local stories, traditional music, dancing and hospitality.

Day 6

GOLDEN MONKEY TREKKING โ€“ DIAN FOSSEY EXHIBITION โ€“ KIGALI

After breakfast, drive to Volcanoes National Park for Golden Monkey trekking. Enter the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of the playful and endangered golden monkeys, endemic to the Albertine Rift. After the trek, visit the Dian Fossey exhibition and learn about her pioneering work with mountain gorillas and the history of gorilla conservation in the Virunga Mountains. Continue to Kigali and check in at Hideaway Hotel for a relaxed final evening.

Day 7

KIGALI CITY TOUR โ€“ GENOCIDE MEMORIAL โ€“ DEPARTURE

After breakfast, enjoy a Kigali city tour, depending on your departure time. Explore Kigaliโ€™s vibrant neighborhoods, local culture and selected city highlights. If your flight schedule allows, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important place of remembrance and education about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and Rwandaโ€™s journey of rebuilding and reconciliation. Transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

  • Gorilla trekking: The trek can take several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. A reasonable level of fitness is helpful.
  • Golden Monkey trekking: The activity takes place on the Virunga slopes and involves walking through bamboo-covered terrain.
  • Weather: Conditions in rainforest and mountain areas can change quickly. Carry light rain protection and suitable layers.
  • Footwear: Comfortable, closed hiking shoes with good grip are recommended for forest activities.
  • Clothing: Long trousers and a long-sleeved top are useful for forest trekking. Neutral, comfortable clothing is recommended.
  • Personal items: Bring a small daypack, refillable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent and a camera/phone.
  • Border crossing: The itinerary includes a Rwandaโ€“Uganda land-border crossing. Carry the required travel documents and ensure your visa/entry requirements are arranged before travel.
  • Departure day: The Kigali city tour and Genocide Memorial visit on Day 7 depend on the timing of your international flight.
  • Activities: Exact timing may change according to park regulations, trekking conditions, border procedures and weather.
