Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, the largest island, Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar Island), lying about 35 kilometers from the mainland. It's one of East Africa's most atmospheric destinations, combining white-sand beaches and turquoise water with one of the region's most storied towns: Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow winding lanes, intricately carved wooden doors, Arab-Omani merchant houses, a former slave market, ancient mosques, and Swahili food culture. Zanzibar sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean trade routes and was for centuries the commercial heart of the East African coast β a hub for spices, ivory, and, historically, the slave trade. Today it's primarily known as East Africa's premier beach destination, widely used as a post-safari extension from Tanzania, Kenya, or Rwanda.
Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City: walking tours through centuries-old Arab-Swahili architecture, the House of Wonders, Palace Museum, Old Dispensary, and former slave market and memorial
Nungwi and Kendwa beaches on the northern tip, with powdery white sand, calm turquoise water good for swimming year round, and a vibrant sunset beach bar atmosphere
Paje, Jambiani, and the east coast, known for world-class kite surfing when the southeast trades blow (June to October), with a more local, laid-back atmosphere
Snorkeling and diving on Mnemba Atoll, one of East Africa's top dive sites, rich in turtles, dolphins, whale sharks, and coral gardens
The Spice Tour, a half-day walk through a working spice plantation to taste, smell, and learn about Zanzibar's clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, and black pepper
Dolphin watching off Kizimkazi on the southern tip, where spinner and bottlenose dolphins are resident year round
Sunset dhow cruise in the traditional wooden sailing boats still used by Zanzibari fishermen
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park to see the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else in the world
Swahili cooking class in Stone Town or a beach village, focusing on coconut curries, pilau rice, Zanzibar pizza, and freshly grilled seafood
Swimming conditions depend on which coast you're on and the time of year. The west and north coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa) are good year round because they're sheltered from the southeast monsoon. The east coast becomes excellent for swimming in November to March (short dry and northeast monsoon), while the southeast trade winds June to October make it choppy for swimming but perfect for kite surfing.
Zanzibar International Airport receives daily flights from Dar es Salaam (20 minutes), Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kilimanjaro, plus a growing number of regional and charter routes. A high-speed ferry from Dar es Salaam takes two hours and runs several times daily, making Zanzibar easily reachable without flying.
