Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park lies in northern Tanzania's Manyara Region, about 120 kilometers south of Arusha, and covers roughly 2,850 square kilometers of savannah, swamp, and woodland dominated by ancient baobab trees that give the landscape a character quite unlike anywhere else in East Africa. The Tarangire River flows through the park and never dries completely, drawing extraordinary concentrations of wildlife during the dry season between June and October when surrounding waterholes fail. During these months Tarangire hosts some of the largest elephant herds in Africa, sometimes numbering several hundred animals moving together, and its predator activity β€” lions, leopards, and cheetahs β€” is equally strong. Tarangire is quieter and less visited than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, giving it an unhurried, immersive quality that experienced safari travelers often rate as a highlight of Tanzania.

When to Visit

The dry season (June to October) brings wildlife concentration around the river to spectacular levels and is the classic time to visit. The wet season (November to May) sees animals disperse across the wider ecosystem, the landscape turns green and dramatic, and migratory bird species arrive in large numbers β€” making it the best birdwatching period. Both have their own character.

Southern Wilderness

The southern part of the park beyond Kwa Kuchinja is less visited and wilder, accessed primarily through a handful of private conservancies and mobile camps. It's worth considering for travelers who want walking safaris and a more off-the-beaten-track experience within the northern Tanzania circuit.
