Jinja is a lakeside town in eastern Uganda on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, where the Victoria Nile begins its 6,650-kilometer journey to the Mediterranean Sea. The town is built on gentle hills overlooking the water and has transformed in recent years from an old industrial center into East Africa's adventure tourism capital. Whitewater rafting on the Nile is the headline activity β the rapids here are some of the largest commercially rafted rapids in the world, and the stretch below the Bujagali Falls draws rafters, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders from across the region. Beyond rafting, Jinja offers bungee jumping, quad biking, horseback riding, kayaking on the calmer upper Nile, and boat trips to see the lake's source β marked by a plaque at Rippon Falls, now submerged beneath the Owen Falls Dam reservoir, named for John Hanning Speke who declared it the source of the Nile in 1862.

Jinja is approximately 80 kilometers east of Kampala, about two hours by road on the Jinja Highway. It's a natural stop on the way to Sipi Falls or Kidepo Valley in eastern Uganda, or as a standalone adventure extension from Kampala or Entebbe before or after a safari.
π¦ With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris
We include Jinja as an adventure day or overnight at the start or end of Uganda itineraries, pairing whitewater rafting or a sunset Nile cruise with an Entebbe departure for travelers who want an adrenaline counter to the safari calm.
ποΈ Best Time to Visit
Year round. Rapids are strongest and most exciting between March and May (after the long rains) and October to November. June to September offer calmer conditions but equally good rafting.
