Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is one of Uganda's most spectacular safari destinations β€” a vast wilderness where open savannah, riverine forests, wetlands and the mighty River Nile come together to create one of East Africa's most extraordinary wildlife experiences. Located in north-western Uganda, Murchison Falls is the country's largest national park and forms part of the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area. The park is divided by the Victoria Nile, which flows across the landscape before reaching its most dramatic moment: the famous Murchison Falls, where the enormous volume of the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge of approximately seven metres wide before plunging dramatically into the Devil's Cauldron below β€” an explosion of water, mist, sound and rainbows.

The Murchison Falls

At Murchison Falls, the Victoria Nile is dramatically compressed through a narrow rocky gorge of approximately seven metres before plunging around 43 metres into the gorge below. The power of the water is extraordinary β€” the sound can be heard from a considerable distance and the spray often creates beautiful rainbows. There are two ways to experience the falls: visiting the top from the land, or approaching from the water on a boat safari.

Wildlife Highlights

The park is home to large populations of African elephants, lions, leopards, Cape buffaloes, endangered Rothschild's giraffes, Uganda kob, Jackson's hartebeest, hippos, Nile crocodiles and warthogs. The Shoebill β€” one of Africa's most distinctive birds β€” can be sought in the wetlands of the Nile–Lake Albert Delta.

The Budongo Forest

The wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area includes the Budongo Forest and Kaniyo Pabidi, which are important habitats for chimpanzees and other forest species. This creates a remarkable combination: savannah wildlife and the Nile in Murchison Falls, followed by primates and ancient forest in the Budongo ecosystem.

How Many Days?

A minimum of three days allows visitors to experience game drives, a boat safari and Murchison Falls. Four to five days allows a more relaxed and comprehensive experience, adding shoebill excursions, chimpanzee tracking, birdwatching, fishing and cultural experiences.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Murchison Falls can be visited throughout the year. The drier periods (June–September and December–February) are generally excellent for wildlife viewing β€” animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense. The rainy seasons transform the landscape to vibrant green, offering excellent birdwatching, photography and fewer visitors. The best time depends on your interests: wildlife viewing, birdwatching or photography.
