Mombasa Beaches

Kenya's Indian Ocean coast stretches for roughly 480 kilometers and centers on Mombasa, East Africa's busiest port city and oldest coastal settlement, with origins going back more than a thousand years. Mombasa Island sits between two creeks connected to the ocean, with the historic Old Town β€” a UNESCO-listed Swahili heritage site β€” on its eastern edge. The beaches north and south of Mombasa offer a combination of white sand, warm clear water, coral reefs, and a distinctly relaxed pace that contrasts sharply with the inland safari. North Coast beaches like Watamu and Malindi are known for excellent snorkeling, diving, and a more laid-back atmosphere; the South Coast around Diani is among East Africa's finest stretches of beach, with beach bars, water sports, and family-friendly resorts alongside village life and colobus monkey colonies in the coastal forest.

Diani Beach

About 30 kilometers south of Mombasa, Diani is Kenya's most developed beach destination, with a long strip of white sand, coral reef snorkeling, kite surfing, wind surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and a strong selection of beach lodges, boutique hotels, and beach bars. The adjacent Colobus Conservation project protects the endangered Angolan colobus monkeys that live in the coastal forest alongside the resort strip.

Getting There

Mombasa Moi International Airport receives direct flights from Nairobi (one hour), and scheduled internal flights connect to Diani Beach airstrip directly. The overnight Madaraka Express train from Nairobi to Mombasa is a popular scenic option that takes around eight hours.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

We close many Kenya itineraries with three to four nights on the coast, using Diani or Watamu as a beach extension after safari, adding a Fort Jesus visit, snorkeling on the reef, and time in the Old Town.
