Materuni Village & Waterfalls

Materuni is a Chagga village on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, around 30 kilometers from Moshi, sitting at roughly 1,800 meters in a landscape of banana groves, coffee plantations, and mist-fed waterways with views across the plains toward Amboseli. The village is known for two things: a community-run waterfall tour that leads through terraced farmland to a beautiful cascade, and one of the most authentic farm-to-cup coffee experiences in Tanzania. The Chagga people who farm here have grown coffee on Kilimanjaro's slopes for generations, and Materuni's farm tour walks visitors through the entire process, from picking to pulping, fermentation, drying, roasting, and grinding, finishing with a fresh cup brewed by hand over a wood fire.

Half-Day from Moshi or Arusha

Materuni is easily visited as a half-day excursion from Moshi (about 45 minutes) or as a full-day trip from Arusha. It pairs naturally with a Kilimanjaro climb as a cultural warm-up or cool-down, and with a northern circuit safari as a relaxed cultural add-on.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

We include Materuni as a half-day experience for travelers climbing Kilimanjaro or starting a northern Tanzania safari, giving a genuine taste of Chagga culture and Kilimanjaro's coffee heritage.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Year round. The coffee harvest (October to December) is especially lively, but the tour and waterfall are rewarding in any month.
