The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife destination and one of the great game-viewing areas on earth. It covers approximately 1,510 square kilometers of open grassland, riverine forest, and rolling hills in southwestern Kenya, bordering Tanzania's Serengeti at the Mara River β together they form a single vast ecosystem of around 25,000 square kilometers. The Mara is home to the largest concentration of lions in Africa, and its open plains and dense game make every hour in a vehicle rewarding regardless of season. It's most famous as the stage for the Great Migration, the annual movement of more than 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle from the Serengeti into Kenya between July and October, with dramatic river crossings at the Mara and Talek rivers. But the Mara offers exceptional safari year round: outside migration season, resident game remains dense, predator activity is high, and the landscape feels significantly emptier.
The Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings at the Mara and Talek rivers, best from July through October as herds push north from the Serengeti
Big cat encounters: the Mara has exceptionally high lion density, along with strong cheetah and leopard populations, making it one of the best places in Africa to observe all three
Dawn game drives before the camps wake up, when predators are still active and the light turns the plains gold
Hot air balloon safaris over the Mara at sunrise, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush
Maasai village visits to learn about the culture, cattle management, warrior traditions, beadwork, and conservation partnerships
Night game drives from private conservancies bordering the reserve, offering nocturnal sightings not possible inside the park
Walking safaris with experienced guides, covering the same ground on foot with a very different perspective
Birdwatching across grassland, riverine forest, and wetland, with more than 450 species recorded including lilac-breasted rollers, crowned cranes, secretary birds, and ostriches
Fly camping in the private conservancies for a more immersive, intimate bush experience
The areas surrounding the official reserve, including Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Mara North, Ol Kinyei, and Lemek, are privately managed conservancies on Maasai community land. They operate with stricter vehicle limits, allow night drives and walking safaris, and generally offer a more exclusive experience than the main reserve. Most top-end lodges are based here rather than inside the official park boundaries.
Beyond the Big Five and the migration herds, the Mara supports African wild dogs, spotted hyenas, bat-eared foxes, servals, jackals, crocodiles, hippos, elands, topis, Grant's and Thomson's gazelles, impalas, Masai giraffes, and Burchell's zebras, among many others. Predator density is exceptional by any African standard.
