Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds one of East Africa's most alkaline lakes in the floor of the Great Rift Valley, about 160 kilometers northwest of Nairobi and easily combined with Naivasha or the Maasai Mara. The park covers 188 square kilometers of lake, savannah, woodland, and escarpment, and has been a Kenyan flagship for rhino conservation for decades. Both black and white rhinos are well protected here and regularly seen, and the park also holds lions, leopards, Rothschild's giraffes (one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies), buffaloes, waterbucks, reedbucks, and baboons. The lake itself is best known for its flamingos, which can number in the hundreds of thousands when conditions are right, turning the shallows pink from a distance.
Flamingo spectacles along the lake shore when conditions bring large concentrations, best viewed from the Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill viewpoints
Rhino tracking on foot with rangers, both black and white rhinos are present and well-protected within the electric-fenced sanctuary
Rothschild's giraffe sightings, one of the only parks in Kenya protecting this rare subspecies
Game drives through acacia and euphorbia woodland along the Rift Valley escarpment with strong big cat presence
Birdwatching across open water, alkaline mudflats, and woodland, with pelicans, cormorants, African fish eagles, herons, storks, and raptors alongside the flamingos
Viewpoints at Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill overlooking the lake and the Rift Valley walls
Nearby Menengai Crater hike, an extinct volcanic caldera just outside the park with panoramic views
Both lesser and greater flamingos use Lake Nakuru, though numbers fluctuate dramatically with rainfall and water chemistry β in good years the lake can hold more than a million birds. In recent years some have shifted to Lake Bogoria further north, so Nakuru's other wildlife β rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, lions β make it worth visiting regardless of flamingo numbers.

We typically slot Nakuru as a one-night stop on a NaivashaβNakuruβMara road circuit, or as a standalone day trip from Nairobi, timing it around flamingo conditions and rhino tracking.
ποΈ Best Time to Visit
Year round. The dry seasons (July to October and January to March) offer the best overall wildlife viewing. Flamingo numbers are highest after good rains replenish the lake.
