Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda's most distinctive and rewarding wildlife destinations. Located in western Uganda between Kampala, Masaka and Mbarara, the park offers a completely different safari experience from the country's larger wilderness areas. Although relatively compact, Lake Mburo is exceptionally diverse β€” its landscape combines rolling savannah plains, acacia woodlands, wetlands, rocky outcrops, forests and a network of lakes, with Lake Mburo itself at the heart of the ecosystem. The park is particularly famous for its Burchell's zebras, impalas, elands, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos and remarkable birdlife. Its strategic location between Kampala and Uganda's southwestern parks also makes it an excellent stopover when travelling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth or Rwanda.

A Mosaic of Habitats

Lake Mburo's exceptional diversity comes from its combination of open grassland savannah, acacia woodland, rolling hills, rocky ridges, papyrus wetlands and a network of lakes and seasonal swamps. This variety of habitats supports an impressive diversity of wildlife despite the park being relatively compact.

Wildlife Highlights

The park is especially important for species that are difficult to see elsewhere in Uganda: Burchell's zebras, impalas, elands and giraffes are all commonly encountered. The lakes and wetlands provide excellent habitat for hippos, Nile crocodiles and a remarkable variety of water birds.

Horseback Safaris

Lake Mburo is one of the few places in Uganda where horseback safaris are available β€” a unique way to experience the wilderness that can allow for more intimate wildlife encounters than a traditional vehicle safari. Riders may encounter zebras, impalas, elands, giraffes, warthogs and various antelopes up close.

How Many Days?

One night / two days is ideal for a game drive, boat safari and a short nature walk. Two nights / three days is recommended for multiple game drives, a boat safari, horseback riding, guided nature walk and relaxed birdwatching. Lake Mburo is also excellent as a one or two night addition to a longer Uganda or Rwanda safari.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Lake Mburo National Park can be visited throughout the year. The drier periods are often considered excellent for general wildlife viewing β€” animals may gather around water sources, grass is shorter for better visibility and roads are easier to navigate. The rainy seasons bring beautifully green landscapes, migratory birds and spectacular photography opportunities. For birdwatchers, the wetter months can be particularly rewarding.
