Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park sits at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania, about 126 kilometers west of Arusha, and protects a shallow alkaline lake and its surrounding groundwater forest, open grassland, and acacia woodland. The park itself covers around 330 square kilometers, but the lake takes up the majority of this β€” the terrestrial area is a narrow strip between the escarpment and the shoreline. What the park lacks in size it compensates for in variety: groundwater forest at the northern entrance shelters elephant, buffalo, and baboon troops; the tree-climbing lions of Manyara are famous though increasingly rare and hard to predict; the lake draws enormous concentrations of flamingos, pelicans, and waterbirds when the water level and chemistry are right; and the escarpment viewpoint looking down over the blue lake and pink shore is one of the great panoramas of northern Tanzania.

As Part of a Northern Circuit

Manyara is typically visited as a half-day or single afternoon stop before continuing to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Its compact size and road quality make it easy to absorb quickly, but it also rewards a dedicated full morning with an early start for the tree-climbing lions and forest elephant.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

We include Lake Manyara as a first afternoon stop on Tanzania northern circuit itineraries, catching the forest game and flamingos before heading to Ngorongoro for the crater experience.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Year round. The dry seasons (June to October and December to February) are best for general game viewing. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with rainfall and are unpredictable.
