Lake Kivu is Rwanda's largest freshwater lake and one of Africa's Great Lakes, stretching along the country's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo within the Albertine Rift Valley. It covers roughly 2,700 square kilometers and reaches depths of about 475 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in the world. Calm emerald water, tropical beaches, and dramatic sunsets make it a natural counterpoint to Rwanda's more adventurous wildlife experiences, and it's one of the few large African lakes without crocodiles or hippos, so swimming and paddling are genuinely relaxed here.
Beach time at Rubavu Public Beach, the Karongi waterfront, and small hidden coves around the islands, popular for honeymoons, family holidays, and post gorilla trek relaxation
Kayaking, from short sunset paddles to multi day shoreline expeditions
Stand up paddle boarding around Rubavu, Karongi, and the Kinunu area of Rutsiro, including sunrise and sunset sessions and guided excursions
Boat cruises and island tours to Napoleon Island (home to a large fruit bat colony), Amahoro Island (known as Peace Island), Monkey Island (home to vervet monkeys), and various fishing islands
Traditional night fishing with local fishermen, who paddle out at dusk using lanterns to draw sambaza fish, singing as they work
Coffee and tea tours through the volcanic soils west of the lake, following the process from bean to cup
Birdwatching for kingfishers, crowned cranes, pelicans, cormorants, and fish eagles
These towns are linked by one of Africa's most scenic drives, winding through tea plantations, fishing villages, and lake views the whole way.
The Rubavu waterfront, the Karongi hills, lakeside resorts and beaches, and island viewpoints all offer strong views as the lake turns orange and gold at dusk.
