Amboseli National Reserve

Amboseli National Reserve sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in southern Kenya near the Tanzanian border, covering roughly 392 square kilometers of open plains, dry lake beds, swamps, and woodland. At an elevation of about 1,220 meters, it offers what many consider the most photogenic safari backdrop on the continent: enormous free-roaming elephant herds moving across flat savannah, with Africa's highest peak rising behind them. The park's elephants are among the best-studied and least-disturbed on earth, with some individuals habituated to vehicles from years of research by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, founded in 1972. Amboseli is part of a larger ecosystem that extends across international borders and Maasai community land, and conservation partnerships with Maasai communities are a central part of how the reserve is managed today.

Elephant encounters at close range, including opportunities to observe family groups, breeding herds, and large old bulls

✦

Hot air balloon flights over the plains with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, available through some lodges

Wildlife

Amboseli's elephant population is its defining feature: large, relaxed herds with some of the biggest-tusked individuals remaining in Kenya. The reserve also supports lions, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs on occasion, spotted hyenas, jackals, Masai giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, waterbucks, impalas, elands, and mongooses. The swamp areas draw hippos and large concentrations of waterbirds year round.

Getting There

Amboseli is roughly 240 kilometers from Nairobi, around four hours by road, or accessible by daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli airstrip. The main gate at Meshanani is the busiest entry point.

🦍 With GorillaWise Collection & Safaris

We pair Amboseli with the Maasai Mara or Tsavo for a fuller Kenya circuit, or use it as an opener before crossing into Tanzania for Kilimanjaro climbs or northern circuit safaris. We know the lodges well and time arrivals for the best light.

πŸ—“οΈ Best Time to Visit

Year round. The dry seasons (July to October and January to February) offer the best wildlife concentration and clearest Kilimanjaro views. November to June can be lush and green, with fewer visitors.
